Best Practices for CBD Tinctures

3 Best Practices for CBD Tinctures

There is a lot of confusion about CBD tinctures and I thought I might be helpful to provide 3 easy best practices to get the most out of your chosen tincture.

Q&A

1What is CBD?
CBD is short for cannabidiol and it's the second-most abundant chemical that naturally occurs in cannabis. Though it's found in marijuana, whether medicinal or recreational, it's most commonly derived from the cousin of marijuana, or hemp. Extracting CBD from industrial hemp isn't just the most common method, it's the federally legal approach, per the 2018 Farm Bill that was signed into law in 2018. CBD is being adopted by larger and larger portions of the public to treat physical and mental ailments like anxiety, pain, and seizures.
2Will CBD get me high?
Though CBD is derived from Cannabis, whether it's hemp or marijuana, it is non-intoxicating. The high that people feel from Cannabis is due to the psychoactive compound delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
3Is CBD legal?
Yes, within the United States CBD is legal. It's also legal in many parts of the world. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp, including low-THC derivatives like CBD products, from the definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act. However, "based on both the approval of this drug, as well as previous substantial clinical investigations of CBD, CBD cannot be marketed as a dietary supplement, and foods to which CBD has been added cannot be introduced into interstate commerce under the FD&C Act," according to the FDA.
4What is the endocannabinoid system?
Researchers identified the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the 1990s while exploring THC, which in and of itself is a cannabinoid. The ECS helps regulate a number of bodily functions, like sleep, digestion, pain, mood, appetite, memory, and reproduction. It contains three core elements: endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. Endocannabinoids are also known as endogenous cannabinoids, because they're naturally made in the body. There are receptors throughout the body that endocannabinoids bind to in order to relieve or regulate various bodily processes.
5How does CBD promote homeostasis?
Homeostasis creates balance in the human body. For example, when you get hot, you sweat. When you sweat, that liquid evaporates on the skin. The body's temperature then lowers. Again, sweat is just one example of homeostasis. The endocannabinoid system plays a role in homeostasis, affecting a number of bodily processes like pain management. The receptors in the endocannabinoid system are modified by CBD so that they are harder to over-activate. CBD also boosts the amount of endocannabinoids in the body. It does this by slowing uptake and degradation of endocannabinoids. It also balances hormones and the central nervous system.
6Will CBD show up on a drug test?
Drug tests for marijuana consumption are looking for traces of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol — more commonly known as THC. CBD, when derived from hemp, does not contain much, if any, THC. In fact, hemp for commercial use cannot contain more than 0.3 percent THC, which is a negligible amount. It's not a perfect comparison, but think of it like poppy seeds in muffins. They won't show up as opiates on your drug test.
7Can pets take CBD?
CBD for pets is taking off as a valid and legitimate way to treat common ailments. Naturally, dosage will vary depending on the size of the animal, and it's not perfect for every type of pet (don't put it in your goldfish tank), but it's gaining popularity as a means to treat anxiety, promote calm, and help alleviate pain.
8What is water soluble CBD?
Water soluble products are more readily available for absorption from the body because they're able to mix with water. CBD oil is hydrophobic, meaning it does not mix or break down in water. This inhibits uptake and reduces the amount of CBD that your body is able to use from your dose. Water-soluble CBD products circumvent that issue and allow you to better absorb the product and benefit from its effects.
9What is full spectrum CBD?
Full spectrum CBD takes into account the entire plant — that is, it's an oil or product that contains all of the cannabinoids that naturally occur in the plant. Keep in mind, however, that the CBD product will maintain the required THC level, which is at or below 0.3 percent. Full spectrum products are high quality, high content CBD.
10What is the shelf life of CBD?
The shelf life of CBD end products ranges from roughly one to two years, but it'll vary. The extraction methodology will ultimately determine the structure of the CBD and therefore its inherent shelf-life. Not only that, but storage methods will also impact its longevity. Dark spaces, low temperatures, and air-tight sealing will help increase its overall lifespan.
11What are phytocannabinoids?
Within the leaves, stems, and flowers of Cannabis plants live phytocannabinoids. There are more than a hundred of them, and they all contribute to the wonderful effects of the plant. These are the medicinal ingredients that treat the ailments in humans and animals. CBD is one of the most popular phytocannabinoids. Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids that do not naturally occur in the human body like endocannabinoids, instead only being produced by plants.
12How should I take CBD?
This depends on the individual and their preferences for consumption. Generally, there are a few ways to try before finding what works best for you: topically, orally, sublingually, and via inhalation. The bioavailability will differ based on the consumption method, so be sure to research which is most palatable to you. It's personal. No method is universally better than another.
13What is bioavailability?
Bioavailability is the body's ability to absorb and utilize the active ingredient in a product. It's the amount and rate at which chemical compounds are absorbed into the bloodstream. Bioavailability is determined by the chemical and consumption method, with inhalation and sublingual methods being the most efficient. Oral consumption is generally impacted by digestion and metabolism.
14What is the right dosage?
Regardless of your chosen consumption method (intranasal, sublingual, oral, topical), you should start with low dosages and work your way up to an effective dose. Also, consider the bioavailability of your consumption method to calculate the anticipated amount of CBD that will enter your bloodstream.
